The whole of our message that we want to share at Arran Baptist Church is wrapped up in the person of Jesus - who is the very heart of the 'gospel', a word which means 'Good News.' The gospel not just 'good advice', but it is an announcement of what has gone wrong, how it can be put right, and how this has been made possible through Jesus.
We can experience Jesus as our Saviour from our sinful rebellion against God, and as our Lord who gives leadership to our lives. Here are four key truths which outline the very basics of the message about Jesus:
The gospel reveals God’s love for us: “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9, ESV).
Through the gospel, we come to learn that everyone has turned from God many times and in many ways. This is what the Bible calls 'sin'. The gospel teaches us that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23, ESV). People without the forgiveness of God are spiritually dead, or separated from God and the life He gives. The standard for eternal life is 'holiness' and we fall far short (Romans 3:23).
As God's perfect Son, Jesus died in your place, paying the penalty for your sins. We did the crime - he paid the fine with his own life's blood. But He did not just die. He rose from the dead and is alive today. He is also reigning now as the Lord of all. “God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, ESV).
As you understand who Jesus is and what He has done for you, recognising that we cannot wipe our own slate clean, you can receive Him into your life through faith (John 1:12). Paul describes this as the gift of God’s grace: “By grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9, ESV).
Repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ lead us into eternal life which begins now - we start again by the help of God's Holy Spirit working in us as we follow Jesus.
